Port Forwarding or NAT issues

I have a USB over Network server running in the office LAN. When the client machine (win2k3/32bit) is in the same network, all works great.
 
If I move the client VM to a different network, and have it connect to the office server via a port-forwarded address/port on our external router/firewall (DNAT), it can see the list of available devices just fine, and can even connect to them. Unfortunately, once connected, the devices don't appear to work on the client.
 
It's really puzzling, as this is the only difference, I just copied a VM to 2 different locations. There are no firewalling issues either. Just to be certain, the client only needs to make a single TCP connection to the server and that's it, right? Is there something in the protocol that relies on each other's IP addresses or something like that ?

What do you mean? are they detected by the clients OS? Could you please describe it or post a screen shot showing the issue?
 
 
Yes, the single TCP connection is needed.

Here is what I mean. They are detected by the USB over Network client, that's for sure. It's showing the device as connected succesfully. On the Win2k3 client OS point of view, the hardware manager will list the usb device as present, but attempts to use it behave just like it wasn't there.
 
For instance, a generic USB storage device (USB key) will not show up as a drive, for instance. In my particular instance, the device I am trying to get to work is a Smart Card reader ( SMC 532 PinPad Reader ). So, as far as I can tell, the guest os sees the smartcard reader in the hardware manager, but any attempts to access the smartcard itself just fail (behaving just like no card or reader was present)

It looks like everything is ok but the last thing you need is to install the USB device drivers on your remote (client) PC (if you have any).  
Please install the drivers. I'll be waiting for your feedback here.
